Weight Check

We had the girl's two-year and 9-month old well-baby visit today. No shots for either of them today so it was a great visit. Here are their stats.

ALLISON: 2 YEARS
Height: 32” (2 ft 8 in)
Weight: 27 lbs

AMELIA:

9 MONTHS:
Head Circumference: 46 cm
Height: 28” (2 ft 4 in)
Weight: 21 lbs 2 oz

Since I don't like to compare the two girls, I won't mention how much Allison weighed at one years old.

A Birthday Review

We celebrated Allison's birthday on Saturday at my parents with my side of the family. We had ice cream sundaes and mega cupcakes. It was a very fun afternoon. Allison enjoyed playing with her cousins and learned how to play "Red Light, Green Light" (with a little help from mom). After her party we went out for pizza with Nana and Papa.
Allison enjoying her balloons.

Allison was eyeing all the treats on the table. Notice the spot on her shirt. It was stained before the party even started. M&Ms and a child that is teething isn't a good mix; you get multi-colored drool.

Allison wasn't too sure what to make out of people singing to her.

Finally, what she was waiting for all afternoon.

With a little help from Dad, Allison really enjoys the frosting.

Allison received many wonderful presents. Thank you to everyone for being so generous.

Even Amelia enjoyed the party.

Allison with all of her cousins.

Party number two. On Sunday, Brian's parents and sister came over for cake and ice cream. Prior to her party, Allison spent the morning playing with her new toys. Her special birthday meal was chicken nuggets and apple slices at McDonalds.

She received many more wonderful gifts. Aunt Cheryl and Uncle Dale, thank you for the Little People Farm set. She loves it. We missed you at the party.
I got up from the table to get the camera and it didn't even take a second before Allison went for my ice cream. She loves eating off my plate.

Allison doing "cheers" with Grandma and Grandpa. She loves clinking glasses with people and saying "cheers' but it comes out more like "chees." It is so sweet.
Thank you to everyone who helped make her birthday so special.

Happy Birthday Little One

It’s 9:01 pm – Happy Birthday. You are conked out in bed so I can’t wish you an official “Happy Birthday.” You went down tonight without a peep. It has been a busy two days with not one, but two parties.

This past year has been a big one for you. You started off leaving the infant stage, not being able to walk yet, to the beginnings of “toddlerhood” where your wobbly legs took you a few steps, and then to full “toddlerhood” where you walk, run, and jump about. The past few weeks I see that you are leaving this stage and starting to inch your way into the world of becoming a pre-schooler. Granted, you still have a while to get there, but you have begun the journey. Some of the signs are very obvious, such as you defiantly telling me “NO!” as I try to help you with something I have done on a daily basis, like putting your shoes on or getting you into your car seat. Other times are sweet, such as when you feed your baby doll with such care and tenderness.

And then there are those moments that I catch just a glimpse, out of the corner of my eye…when you are on our bed intently watching a video and you are lying on your stomach with your legs bent behind you. There is nothing “special” about you doing that – it’s not like you are doing a trick or something that requires a skill. When you are older and reading this blog you will probably roll your eyes and say “Oh Mom,” but when you have kids of your own one day you will know exactly what I am talking about. It is those special little things you do that make me realize you are growing up and how precious you are.

Allison, I can’t even begin to tell you how much you mean to your Dad and me. You are such a joy in our lives. Your hugs and kisses, your funny facial expressions, and the way you take care of Amelia all mean so much to us.

Thank you for letting us be part of this journey. We have enjoyed the ride and can’t wait for the adventure to continue.

Love,

Mom and Dad

Twins???

With the girls being so close in age, we were prepared with the idea that we would often be asked "are they twins?" However, this was something we were expecting when they were two and three years old at the earliest.

We have been asked before if they are twins, however the person doing the asking is usually under the age of eight or the drunk man I encountered one day. Although I suspect he may have been asking, not because he thought that they were close in age, but rather he wanted to make sure there really were two kids in the stroller and that he wasn't seeing double.

However, when we were on vacation last week, we were asked several times a day if the girls were twins. I don't think people truly thought they were twins, but rather they couldn't believe they were more than a year apart, so they were quite confused. I think they were trying to figure out the true story.

This past week I went to the Farmer's Market with some friends and a gentleman asked me if they were twins. The wife hit him in the arm and said "Fred, they are not twins, can't you see that"...with an eye roll of course. I thought that was funny.

While they are not twins, they have been a double blessing to us. While we were on vacation, we went out for Chicago-style pizza. Any fan of this kind pizza knows it takes forever to make, so we had an hour wait before we got our food. Both girls behaved perfectly. I couldn't have asked for anything more. An older couple was seated next to us and got a kick out of both girls. They paid lots of attention to them after they were seated, in fact the wife got after the husband for distracting Amelia while Brian was trying to feed her. We weren't going to complain as he was keeping the girls entertained. On their way out, they stopped off at our tables to tell us how truly lucky we were to have such beautiful girls. I think I just might have to say "ditto".

Our Summer Vacation

This past week we went to Lake Geneva for our summer vacation. My co-worker has a timeshare and allows us to use his extra points to rent a condo. This year we decided on Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, because it was the only place we could find that was available within a 5-7 hour drive. After last year's 16 hour trip to Virginia Beach, we decided to stay closer to home.

Brian did a great job in researching the area and found that there were several places we could go to for day-trips.

We left last Sunday and arrived at the Orange Lake Resort which is located at the Grand Geneva Spa and Resort. The drive there wasn't too bad. Allison kept busy with her activities that I had packed for her. Amelia, unlike her sister, actually napped and was content with playing with a few of her toys. Once we checked-in and unpacked our stuff, we let the kids play in the pool. They had a nice kiddie pool that was only a few inches deep. It also had a mushroom with flowing water that Allison was very intrigued by, but at the same time didn't want to get too close to. However, she had no issue with making Brian go under the water. She thought that was pretty funny.

On Monday, our day started off bright and early with a 6:30 am wake up call by both girls, which in comparison to the rest of the week was sleeping in. The remainder of the week both girls woke up at 5:30 am. We were able to get them back to sleep, however it was harder for Brian and I to fall back to sleep at that point.

Once we finished with breakfast, we took a walk and explored the grounds. Allison liked the fountain that was at the main entrance. A cool fact that we didn't know about the resort until we got there was that it used to be a Playboy resort back in the late sixties and seventies. The main buildings were inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and had a few touches by Hugh Hefner. The facilities were very nice and well-kept.

After our walk we toured Lake Geneva. It reminded me of towns along the Lake Michigan coast such as Petoskey, Pentwater, etc. There were lots of little shops, including a toy store called Allison's Wonderland. They had a nice public area along Geneva Lake with a fountain that Allison enjoyed. She also liked the boats in the marina. They had tour boat rides you could take, but we decided with an antsy toddler that wouldn't have been the best idea. We may have ended up swimming our way onto shore.

This was the view from our condo.

Allison enjoying her afternoon snack while trying to watch television.

On Tuesday, we headed to the city of Racine to visit the zoo, which is located on the shores of Lake Michigan. Allison and I "explored" the zoo by train. It was a nice zoo. A little small but just the right size for Allison.

After the zoo, we headed down to the waterfront for lunch and walked along the lakeshore while Mia took her nap. Later that night back in Lake Geneva, we went to Gino's East for some delicious Chicago-style pizza. Granted we weren't actually in Chicago, but it was the closest thing we have had to Chicago pizza in a very long time. Later that night, we treated ourselves to gelato at the coffee shop at the resort. Allison ate chocolate and Amelia loved the strawberry. Brian and I ate the leftovers.

On Wednesday, we decided to stick close to the resort so we didn't have to put the kids back in the car. We went out for breakfast and looked at some of the shops we didn't get to on Monday. Since we didn't take a day trip, we were able to stick to the kids' schedule and let them take their naps, which was greatly needed at this point. You could tell Allison was getting very tired. After naps, we grilled steaks and had corn-on-the-cob, a favorite of Allison's. We ended the evening with a trip to the pool.

On Thursday, we took a day-trip to Milwaukee, where we once again headed to another zoo. However this one was a little bigger and took us longer.

True to my frugual self, I was very excited that we found street parking, which is very limited. This saved us from a $10 parking fee, plus since we have a membership to the local zoo in Grand Rapids, we received free admission to both zoos that week. We payed for half of our membership this past week.

The girls liked the Aviary building where we saw the penguins. They also had ducks that were free to roam one section of the building.

The zoo is very nice and has many exhibits that the girls could see the animals and watch them move around. Even Amelia picked up on some of the animals and was intently watching them.

One of the exhibits that really allowed you to get close to the animals was the tiger. It was really cool to see him so close but at the same time a bit nerve-wracking. At one point in time, the tiger stopped right in front of me and was staring at me. The fact that he did that right after I took his picture didn't leave me with a good feeling. At that point in time, I was hoping the six inches of plexi-glass was very strong.

After the zoo, we were going to head downtown to either go to the Children's Museum or the lakeshore, however both girls conked out within minutes of being in the car. Since it is such a rarity that Allison actually sleeps in the car, we decided to stay on the highway and head to Kenosha, where we stopped off at the outlet mall.

Later that evening, we headed back to Lake Geneva one last time for dinner and a walk, however it was getting overcast so we skipped the walk and went straight to dinner. The rain did hold off so we were able to get one last trip to the pool and the gelato shop. By then Allison was getting brave and walked under the mushroom to get to Brian. She was so proud of herself for doing that.

This is one of the few pictures that both girls were smiling at the same time (even though you can't see Amelia's smile behind the seat buckle strap).

On Friday we took off for home. Allison kept herself busy playing with stickers. Can you believe with a tired face like you see, that she never took a nap on the car ride home? By then I was so tired myself, that I was begging her to take a nap so I could take one myself. However true to Allison's form, she never gave in. When we arrived home everyone was happy that the car ride was over. Amelia was happy to be with her toys once again.

Overall we had a nice trip. Traveling with two-under-two was a bit challenging at times. It doesn't leave you with much time to relax yourself. Thank goodness for early bedtimes which gave us a few hours of peace and quiet.

Happy 3/4 Birthday

On Monday we celebrated Amelia's 9 month birthday while we were on vacation in Lake Geneva, WI (more to follow on our trip.) We actually celebrated Allison's 9 month birthday while we were on vacation in Virgina Beach, so I thought it was kind of fun that we were able to get a similar picture of Amelia at the same age.

Amelia is getting so close to crawling. She gets on all fours and rocks back and forth. She also does push-ups. We think it will be a matter of days before she starts crawling. While I am excited for her to reach a new milestone, it does present new challenges. Mia was always content sitting on the floor and playing with her toys. Now she will get on her tummy to try to crawl and quickly gets frustrated. We spent a lot of time on our vacation picking her off the floor and sitting her back up, only to have her crying for help a minute later.

Amelia is easily entertained by Allison. She loves her big sister, however she is learning how to fend for herself, like sneaking toys away from Allison when she isn't looking, especially in the bathtub.

She is "talking" so much more. I love hearing her chatter. At times I have to look at the kids to see who is doing the talking as Amelia is starting to sound like Allison with the noises she makes.

Pool time is going much better as long as the water is warm. However with the temperatures the way they have been, we haven't taken the pool out of the garage much this summer.

Still no teeth yet. Allison is just cutting her fourth 2-year molar, so now that we are done with her, I suspect we will start round two soon with Amelia. We should buy stock in Tylenol and teething rings.
