A few weeks ago our family was supposed to go to a members only party at the local botanical garden in celebration of their butterfly exhibit. However, Allison was sick the night before, so I ended up bringing just Amelia. I was afraid that might create some hardship with Allison, but in reality Allison is my homebody and was perfectly content with staying at home with her Dad.
On the way to the gardens, I stopped off at McDonalds to get a soda. I had worked all day and needed the caffeine boost. Amelia was very interested in my drink and wanted some of it. So, I told her that she would get "her drink" at the party. Amelia was so excited about this that for the rest of the car ride and the walk into the building she kept talking about "her drink." The first thing she wanted to do was go to the refreshment area. I think we could have stayed in this one area and she would have been completely satisfied. I have to say that this made my night as well. Amelia was so proud of herself while drinking her lemonade and was so very excited. I had so much fun just sitting back and watching her enjoy her refreshments and listening to the music. It is a nice treat and change of pace to take only one of the girls out every once in a while - it is much more relaxing.
One of the things I love about Amelia is that she lives in her own little world at times. I don't think it really dawned on her that she was at a "party." To her, she was just happy being out of the house and spending time with her Mom - the other people there were merely part of the decorations. We went downstairs to do an arts and craft project and I saw the swarm of people in the room, along with the tables of glue and scissors. Since Amelia can be a crazy woman with glue and scissors, coupled with the huge crowd, I said "no way" to myself and immediately turned out of the room. Amelia didn't even realize I denied her a chance to do a project; in her eyes, walking down the stairs was excitement enough.
Amelia did like the tattoo station and playing with the flashlight (you were supposed to search for butterflies in the dark, however Daylight Savings Time started the night before, so it was still pretty bright out). It was a great night and made me realize that we need to spend more one-on-one time with each of the girls. Later that night when I had returned home, Allison told me that she loves when Mom and Mia leave and she and Dad get to stay home and make towers (out of lego blocks) and watch TV.
